JOIN THE LIT WITH LIBERATE READING GROUP

Lit with Liberate will meet in October to discuss the graphic novels The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich by Deya Muniz and Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe. Multiple copies are available to borrow, email ga@library.gg to reserve yours.

Come along for snacks, drinks and book chat in the Linwood Pitts Room on the third floor of the Library. No booking required. If you haven’t read the book but want to come along for a taster of the reading group please do. All welcome.

ABOUT THE PRINCESS AND THE GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH

Lady Camembert wants to live life on her own terms, without marriage. Well, without marrying a man, that is. But the law of the land is that women cannot inherit. So when her father passes away, she does the only thing she can: She disguises herself as a man and moves to the capital city of the Kingdom of Fromage to start over as Count Camembert.

But it’s hard to keep a low profile when the beautiful Princess Brie, with her fierce activism and great sense of fashion, catches her attention. Camembert can’t resist getting to know the princess, but as the two grow closer, will she able to keep her secret?

ABOUT GENDER QUEER

In 2014, Maia Kobabe, who uses e/em/eir pronouns, thought that a comic of reading statistics would be the last autobiographical comic e would ever write. At the time, it was the only thing e felt comfortable with strangers knowing about em. Now, Gender Queer is here. Maia’s intensely cathartic autobiography charts eir journey of self-identity, which includes the mortification and confusion of adolescent crushes, grappling with how to come out to family and society, bonding with friends over erotic gay fanfiction, and facing the trauma of pap smears.

Started as a way to explain to eir family what it means to be nonbinary and asexual, Gender Queer is more than a personal story: it is a useful and touching guide on gender identity—what it means and how to think about it—for advocates, friends, and humans everywhere.

We’re kicking off at Pinguays Bar for a cosy screening of Buffy’s iconic musical episode — then hopping aboard the Petit Train for a full singalong ride through town. After that, it’s back to Pinguays for Halloween games, jelly shots, and spooky silliness until late 👻🍸

Hello, rainbow bingo ballers! 🌈 It’s time for bingo night to raise essential funds for Liberate Pride FC, so nab a ticket, bring your nearest and dearest, and come for a ballin time! ✨

We’ll be putting a LGBTQ+ twist on everything, of course, so if you’re into queer art, drag, musicals, history, etc, then this is the bingo night for you! (There may be some footballery, but you don’t need football knowledge and could just answer based on which player you think is the fittest or something x)

ABOUT THE BOOK

You can fall in love with an outline, you can even make a home with one, but there will come a time where you can’t deny the bones their flesh. A person is no fewer than two things.

Thirty years old with a lifetime of dysphoria and irritating exes rattling around in her head, Max is plagued by a deep dissatisfaction. Shouldn’t these be the best years of her life? Why doesn’t it feel that way? After taking a spill down the stairs at a New Year’s Eve party, she decides to make some changes. First: a stab at good old-fashioned heteronormativity.

Max thinks she’s found the answer in Vincent. While his corporate colleagues, trad friends, and Chinese parents never pictured their son dating a trans woman, he cares for Max in a way she’d always dismissed as a foolish fantasy. But he is also carrying baggage of his own. When the fall-out of a decades-old entanglement resurfaces, Max must decide what forgiveness really means. Can we be more than our worst mistakes? Is it possible to make peace with the past?
